release time:2026-02-13 Views: I want to share:

Recently, a delegation of 11 students from Shanghai University of Electric Power (SUEP), led by faculty advisor Ms. Qi Yongxiao from the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence, embarked on a journey to the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. They participated in the 2026 Winter Vacation Short-Term Study Abroad Program themed “Multiculturalism and Global Competence.” Over the course of two weeks of academic immersion and cross-cultural practice, the students engaged in intensive coursework, participated in project seminars, and conducted field research, successfully completing their study visit and reaping substantial rewards.

This study program was framed around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), systematically integrating academic courses, practical projects, and international exchange activities, with a focus on enhancing students’ professional capabilities and global competence. At the University of Canterbury, the students attended a series of thematic lectures such as “Global Leadership Awareness” and “Cross-Cultural Collaboration and Communication.” They also visited relevant laboratories within the College of Engineering, gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge research and applications in fields like human-computer interaction and sustainable technology. In terms of curriculum design, the program instructors emphasized the integration of theory and practice. Through group research projects, mid-term presentations, and final project showcases, students’ abilities in research analysis, teamwork, and English expression were comprehensively honed. All students successfully completed their academic tasks and were awarded a certificate of completion by the University of Canterbury.

During the practical component of the program, students visited local technology institutions and sustainable demonstration zones. They conducted research and held discussions on topics such as artificial intelligence and ecological conservation, thereby bridging classroom learning with real-world scenarios to deepen their understanding and application of professional knowledge.

While visiting the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Christchurch, the students interacted with diplomatic officials and met with the local mayor. These exchanges provided insights into China-New Zealand relations and international affairs, significantly broadening their global perspective. Throughout the visit, the students actively communicated and proactively integrated into the cross-cultural environment, demonstrating excellent comprehensive qualities and a positive international image.

From the halls of academia to the wilderness of nature, and from cultural immersion to urban exploration, although the study visit lasted only about two weeks, it left a profound impression on the participants. “The collision of ideas transcends language and national borders,” “The specialized courses broadened my academic horizons, providing me with cutting-edge knowledge and diverse perspectives,” “Through cross-cultural exchange, I touched upon genuine warmth and sincerity,” and “Returning home is not the end; this passion for and curiosity about the vast world will serve as new coordinates for my future journey” – these were some of the heartfelt reflections shared by the students, with every word brimming with personal growth and moving experiences.

This study visit to the University of Canterbury in New Zealand represents a significant initiative by Shanghai University of Electric Power to advance the cultivation of international talent and expand students’ global outlook. Through this program, the students not only acquired cutting-edge knowledge and skills but also learned the values of inclusivity, respect, responsibility, and commitment. They have effectively honed their global competence through this immersive cross-cultural exchange.
